SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - While the case of the stolen gnomes in Springfield is going cold, many of the pinched lawn ornaments have now been returned to their rightful owners. We first told you about the Springfield "crime spree" back in October, when someone stole 75 lawn ornaments from around the area and put them all in one yard. Today we checked in with Springfield Police, and they tell us they're still looking for a suspect.
"We'll still try to return them to the owners, but essentially anything that isn't returned to the owner or anything that we can't identify as stolen can't return back," says Sgt. Brent Carpenter of the Springfield Police Department. "It goes to auction." That auction won't be until March. The suspect or suspects face criminal mischief charges, although Sgt. Carpenter says it's unlikely they'll face any jail time. |
As
for the evidence in the case, most of the
gnomes and other assorted animals have been
returned, although some of the gnomes are
still looking for homes.
