Gnome art was first seen in Germany in the 1880's and was mainly used to advertise the gnome manufacturers products. They sought the best artists to draw and paint Gnome scenes mainly for their catalogues, window displays, posters, etc.
As the Garden gnome became more popular during the 1900's artists started using their talents in other ways and became more entrepreneurial, selling their pictures and art work to card, postcard and book publishers. Between 1900-1930 was their most prolific period. Postcards and seasonal cards were everywhere and were loved by children and adults alike. Many cards were embossed and of very high quality. Unfortunately the cards were rarely signed and even publishers names are often missing.
Rather than loose this period to history, we have created a Gnome 'Art' Gallery and have included as much information as possible. If you can 'fill in' any information we would love to hear from you.
