This piece is marked with an impressed 'Foreign' which helps to date it to between the mid 1890s-1923 as a German import intended for the American market. The United States Congress passed the McKinley Tariff Act in 1890, imposing tariffs on imports and requiring the name of the country of origin to be stamped or printed on items imported into the United States. Beginning in 1893, every item that was imported into the United States had to be marked "Foreign". The McKinley Act was revised in 1914: requiring all items after 1923 to be marked with a complete mark if imported into the US, or be turned back at customs. |
