 Erich Griebel

A large earthernware gnome made out of the production moulds in Rot am See, Germany, by Erich Griebel in 2001, together with a picture from an  original Erich Griebel catalogue, date unknown.  The gnome is made of sturdy earthernware, about 22inches tall and weighs about 6½ lbs.  More

(1872) widely known as the "inventor" of the German garden gnome, started his  business over 130 years ago. He made his gnomes exclusively out of ceramic and then lovingly hand painted them.  More

Johann Maresch,  Was born on July 11, 1821 went into partnership with Adolf Baehr around 1841.  Baehr had previously owned a factory in Pirna that produced ceramic wares and garden gnomes.  More

Philipp Griebel,(1874) a trained porcelain maker and moulder of animals and animal heads founded his terracotta factory in Graefenroda, a small town in Thuringia, Germany. Griebel's animal figures which were made for the house and garden were highly sought after and were admired by people all over the world. More

   Puma Plastic 

Plachy & Materne, Wirges,Westerwald, Germany started producing garden gnomes, animals and mushrooms under the name  of Puma plastic  during the late 1960's.  Their gnomes were made of hard plastic blown in two-part moulds and then hand painted. More

Reju  Kurt Renno jr. manufactured  ceramic garden gnomes during the late 50's in his small workshop situated in Ransbach, Westerwald. Germany. Reju gnomes were very substantial and heavy, made with red clay and carefully modelled and hand painted. They were stamped usually on the back with the ' Reju' logo and trade mark. More

  Purzel gnomes 

manufactured gnomes and other figures towards the end of the 1950's. The garden gnomes tended to be  naively modelled in ceramic and were sold as  'original Lauterbacher, Purzel ceramics' The gnomes were carefully hand painted and varnished and were quite distinct in their appearance. More

  Bernhard Bloch

of Eichwald, Bohemia  was one of the top producers of gnome figures during the late 1800's. Their fine work is prized by collectors and still much sort after. The company was founded in 1871 and operated under the Bernhard Bloch name until 1940, when it became Eichwald Porcelain and Stove Factory Bloch & Co. More
