If you are struggling to keep
up with your garden in the see-sawing conditions of summer
drought and flood, why not follow Jean Balcombe's example
and fill your patch with gnomes.
The 67-year-old has covered almost every inch of her garden
in Willesborough, Kent, with a collection of 1,500 gnomes.
The collection - put together with husband Nigel - has been expanding over 20 years.
Jean said: "It started years ago when we fell in love with one particular gnome on holiday.
"Since then the collection has grown, until we ended up having to redesign the whole garden around them so we could show them off."
Jean admits that it might not be to everybody's taste. "But we wouldn't have it any other way, for starters it means we have a colourful garden all year round.
"And it means our gardening chores just entail having to hose them down if they get dirty - there's no weeding, watering or planting to be bothered with."
